INSTRUCTIONS
3. Project 2 - Shooting Practice & Editing
1. Lecture Summary
Week 5 :
Mr Martin conducted the lecture in the photo studio and gave us an introduction to the different scenes we need to film in the production shoot. He went through in detail the types of shots like ( Middle shot, close up shot etc ) and how to handle cameras. We are expected to film ourselves in the next week.
Week 6 : Shooting Day , No Lecture
Week 7 :
Mr Martin introduced to us the basics of color correction and color grading. Color correction refers to the process where every individual clip of a video footage is altered to match the color temperature of multiple shots to a consistent technical standard of appearance and color grading helps create a new visual tone. We are expected to apply these skills when editing our movie teaser.
Week 7 Lecture Slides :
Week 8 : Independent Learning Week
Week 9 :
Mr Martin introduced to us a new software called Adobe Audition which is mainly used for audio changing and adding effects to it. We did a practical in class in which we edited an original female's voice to phone call version, muffled version , bathroom version (slight echo) , underground version (more echo) and lastly alien voice. This is to prepare us for our audio editing task which I documented the outcome and process here.
Week 9 Lecture Slides :
2. Practicals
Week 7 :
We are tasked to edit a short 3 video clip and color correct and grade them accordingly following Mr Martin's instructions. We learnt about adjustment layers and i color corrected them to be the same consistent appearance.

3.1 Exercise 1 : Production Shoot Video
For this task, Mr Martin instructed us to shoot different clips of "Everything, everywhere all at once". We were asked to practice different types of shooting angles following the clips he sent us.
Fig 3.1.1 Drive of different scenes, Week 7 (6/9/2024)
We were split into different groups and all of us had different roles to play, I was given the role of the actress which is Evelyn.
After studying through the scripts given by us, I went to look for a costume that suits Evelyn the most. She mostly wore a purple shirt with flower ornament throughout the movie. I went to shop at Sunway Pyramid for a similar style purple top. As me and Guo Ying both got assigned as main actors, we decided to find the costume together. Waymond style a green polo t-shirt throughout the show.
I increased the speed of the fighting scene to make it more realistic as we filmed this part in slow motion. I increased the speed of the video to 150% and i was pretty satisfied with the outcome.
I slowly began to put together and edited the small transitions to my liking as I want to mimic those teasers that has several few rhythms that sync to the music. As we need not edit this according to the original story plot, I decided to come up with my own plot called "Parallel Universe" which somewhat retains a little bit of the original factor.
For black and white scenes, I decided to apply on the scene where Evelyn is laying half dead in Waymond's hands because it looks very appropriate. I used the black and white effect and directly placed it on the video.
For the blueish scenes, I used them mostly on indoor scenes and as seen in the picture, I adjusted the temperature to more on the cold side and played around with the contrast, highlights and shadows till I reach a satisfactory result.
For the brownish scene, I used it on the scene where the lights are flickering and Evelyn started to walk towards it because i felt that it can be more "warm". Hence, I adjusted the temperature more to the orange side.
For the greenish scenes, I used it on the scene where Waymond nods and smile and i adjusted the tint to be more on the green side as well as the temperature to be cooler.
For desaturated scenes, I used it at my final scene where Waymond snaps open his eyes, however I applied the glitch effect with it as well and adjusted the tint to be more on the purple side and desaturated it to 55.

We kickstarted the shooting process in the photo studio with all the lightings and equipment set up properly. It was quite a fun and tedious process as we had to adjust different camera angles and ensure that everything was shot well. Here are some behind the scenes we took in the shooting process.

After shooting, we waited for our director of photography to upload the raw video clips of each scene and also the audios. Mr Martin told us to edit the scenes in random order into a movie teaser and to make it interesting, we are free to use any music that we like as well.
Editing Process :
Fig 3.1.9 Cutting out raw scenes , Week 7 (6/9/2024)
I edited the scenes to the main parts we need and unliked the audio from the original video clips first and placed them in random order as I haven't thought of how I wanted to arrange them. Next i went onto Youtube to search for cinematic teaser music but more on the suspense/thriller type as my idea is to turn this into a suspense film.
Fig 3.2.0 Speeding up fighting scene , Week 7 (6/9/2024)
I increased the speed of the fighting scene to make it more realistic as we filmed this part in slow motion. I increased the speed of the video to 150% and i was pretty satisfied with the outcome.
The recorded audios were imported in and i cleaned them up by applying denoise and dehummer effects. I increased the volume of some audios as well because the background music may overcover the sound of the audios.
Fig 3.2.2 Arranging of clips , Week 7 (6/9/2024)
I slowly began to put together and edited the small transitions to my liking as I want to mimic those teasers that has several few rhythms that sync to the music. As we need not edit this according to the original story plot, I decided to come up with my own plot called "Parallel Universe" which somewhat retains a little bit of the original factor.
Using prior knowledge learnt, I applied a few effects to both the audios and video clips such as VR digital glitch, Exponential fade, Warp stabilizer and much more to enhance the overall feels of my teaser.
Color Correction :
Fig 3.2.4 Teal & Orange , Week 7 (6/9/2024)
For teal and orange color correction, I decided to use it on outdoor scenes as there is more lighting compared to all the indoor shots. I adjusted the original exposure, contrast and tint and applied adjustment layer to work on the midtone, shadow and highlights.
Fig 3.2.5 Black & White , Week 7 (6/9/2024)
For black and white scenes, I decided to apply on the scene where Evelyn is laying half dead in Waymond's hands because it looks very appropriate. I used the black and white effect and directly placed it on the video.
Fig 3.2.6 Blueish , Week 7 (6/9/2024)
For the blueish scenes, I used them mostly on indoor scenes and as seen in the picture, I adjusted the temperature to more on the cold side and played around with the contrast, highlights and shadows till I reach a satisfactory result.
Fig 3.2.7 Brownish , Week 7 (6/9/2024)
For the brownish scene, I used it on the scene where the lights are flickering and Evelyn started to walk towards it because i felt that it can be more "warm". Hence, I adjusted the temperature more to the orange side.
Fig 3.2.8 Greenish , Week 7 (6/9/2024)
For the greenish scenes, I used it on the scene where Waymond nods and smile and i adjusted the tint to be more on the green side as well as the temperature to be cooler.
Fig 3.2.9 Desaturation , Week 7 (6/9/2024)
For desaturated scenes, I used it at my final scene where Waymond snaps open his eyes, however I applied the glitch effect with it as well and adjusted the tint to be more on the purple side and desaturated it to 55.
Final Video Teaser : Parallel Universe
3.2 Exercise 2 : Instagram/Tik Tok Video
For this task, we are instructed to create our own tiktok/instagram video following our own personal interest. The video should be self titled and we can weave our own theme as long as it is creative and reflects what we want to express personally.
For me, i've always wanted to film a "MV-like" video and the theme I chose is Travel Back to Youth as i find myself always thinking back about the memories I had back than. I came up with a proposal on my video theme as shown below.
Proposal :
I did a video shooting preparation document as I shortlisted the places I want to use for my video shooting as well as the outfits. This is to facilitate easy process during the actual shooting day and to get a clearer big picture as well.
Video Shooting Preparation Document :
I took one whole day from morning to night for the shooting and overall it was quite a fun but tedious task to shoot as I had to change my costumes multiple times. I compiled some shots took as well. After a long day of shooting, the scenes and shots were being imported into a google drive for me to choose during editing.
Fig 3.2.1 Some shots taken
Fig 3.2.2 Google Drive filled with scenes
Editing Process :
For editing, I mainly used Capcut otherwise known as 剪映 as required by Mr Martin but I downloaded the computer software version instead as it is easier for me to edit on my computer compared to using phone.
The key parts of my video involves the current me looking at my past me, so both versions of me needs to appear in the same frame. In order to attain that effect, I used masking for one of the shoot and tilt the mask 180 degrees in order to blend both versions of me in one frame.
Fig 3.2.3 Masking at 180 degrees
Fig 3.2.4 Masking at 180 degrees
Next, I began to color correct the scenes to make it more blue-ish and ensure that all scenes have around the same tone.
Fig 3.2.5 Color Correction
I applied adjustment layers to some scenes, especially those that was shot under the sun to attain that blue-ish effect.
Fig 3.2.6 Color Correction
Next, I proceeded with adding transition effects to ensure smooth flow from one scene to another. I mainly used fogging, pinwheel , blur and panes effect.
Fig 3.2.7 Transitions applied
Lastly, I added wordings to my opening and ending of the video and applied typing text effect on them, I inserted my track which is "晴天 ( SUNNY DAY ) " by Jay Chou.
Fig 3.2.8 Wordings added
I made a video title cover using my favorite scene and color corrected and edited texts inside there to make it a suitable cover.
4. Feedback
Week 6 :
Mr Martin suggested to have scenes where the current me is looking at my past me instead of showing only the past me in the flashback. We want something that can strike nostalgia if we look back at it again.
Week 9 :
After showing the first cut which I only aligned the videos and added mask effect , Mr Martin said the overall video shots are fine and can proceed on with further adjustments and editing.
5. Reflection
Both the video shooting as a group and individual were fun to carry out but I particularly enjoy editing the scenes into a movie trailer feel for the first exercise. I learnt much also regarding how to better use premiere pro and also on shot good shooting exercises. Throughout task 1, I got an in depth view on how professional shooting goes and how much preparation work is needed in order to shoot satisfactory scenes.
For task 2, I got to use my own creativity and produced a tik tok video which uses another software called capcut. Generally, I took much time to prepare for this task as I realised my video needs a few different scenarios and the hardest part was definitely the masking effects during editing as I need to make both versions of me appear naturally together.
Overall, I felt that both tasks greatly improved my skills in video editing and color correcting and I look forward to be able to apply them in future projects.
