1. LECTURES

Class summary

Week 6 :
Mr Hafiz briefed us about Project 2 - Decisive Moment. Basically, we were instructed to read on and researched on urban legends and create a decisive moment poster out of it and animate it as the final task. Decisive moment meant capturing the scene where there is a turning point to a story - the main turning points in the movie . For example in Avatar we can break it down into 3 decisive moments, first is where Jake Sully places himself into the Avatar body and appearing in a new world, second is where he fell in love and third is where he fought against his own kind.

Week 7 :
Mr Hafiz introduced to us composition theory which has 3 main factors, foreground , midground and background. If they are drew and placed in the right place correctly they can capture viewer's attention easily.

Foreground - Close to viewer
Midground - Middle ground
Background - Furthest away from viewer

We can arrange them differently by mainly using contrast and size difference to highlight the main focus.

Good design flow is also known as good arrangement of visual focus and they can lead the viewer's eyes throughout the layout. The visual should be able to influence the way readers digest our work. In order for us to understand it better, Mr Hafiz played a video called "The Soloists" and we were to write down our understanding of the arrangement of backgrounds and camera angles.

My notes regarding the video  :

Fig 1.2 Scene showing good usage of backgrounds , Week 7 (11/6/2023)

In this scene i noticed that there is a very clear contrast of the different backgrounds with the 3 sisters being in midground and the background shows very clear contrast. There is good application of shadows and contrast applied here too.

Fig 1.3 Scene showing good lighting and usage of backgrounds, Week 7 (11/6/2023)

In the scene above, I noticed that they used lightings to bring the main focus of the viewers to the center and they also arranged the backgrounds very well too, ensuring a smooth design flow from scene to scene as well.

Fig 1.4 Scene showing good lighting and focal point , Week 7 (11/6/2023)

The use of camera and lighting here is very well used as it catches the reader's attention to the middle and focal on the three sisters. Shadows and contrast are good tools in leading your viewer through the designs.

Applying textures and noise to designs :
Mr Hafiz taught us how to give more texture and gradients to our works by using the distort function in adobe illustrator and applied grain texture. We were also briefed on how to use gradients in our work to give it more depth. A short exercise was done which is to apply texture and gradient to one of the characters Mr Hafiz gave us, below is my take on the exercise.

Week 8 : Recess Week

Week 9 :
Mr Hafiz introduced to us the concept of limited gif , secondary animation and how it is used. We were briefed through the main details of secondary animation, overlapping action and over through animations.
Secondary animation is any additional animation that emphasizes on the main action to create more dimension without overlapping to the next scene. They are normally added into the scene to emphasize an action or movement. We were also given some good examples to look at by Rebecca Mok and  Zac Gorman

We were instructed to create a limited gif animation for our own urban legend art deco poster as well and identify the actions we can use to create it.

Project 2 : Decisive Moment Poster & Animation

3. Project 2 - Decisive Moment Poster & Animation

3.1 Mood Board & Research
After reading urban legends from different countries, I decided to choose the one I am most familiar with which is the "Sadako Yamamura" urban legend from Japan, also well known in Western culture as the female ghost who climbs out of the television in "The Ring".

I went onto different websites to read the plot and find the decisive moment in the story, the climax of the story is the part where Sadako Yamamura climbs out of the well inside the television and slowly crawls out of the television with her hands reaching out on the floor than killing the victim named Ryuji ( a teenage boy ) . Below is the abstract of the decisive moment which i will be drawing

Fig 3.1.1 Decisive Moment in "Sadako Yumamura" , Week 6 (10/31/2023)

After that, I went to the internet and watched some videos of the decisive moment and drafted a mind map so it can help me in my sketches later on.

After mapping out the details, I did a mood board and used the eyedropper tool to picked out the main colors for important details like Sadako Yamamura , Ryuji , furniture colors and suitable background colors to reference to when I do the poster.

3.2 Paper Sketches
I did a few variation of sketches because Mr Hafiz gave feedback on each of them and i redrafted again before settling on my final composition.

Sketch 1 :
What needs to be changed - Mr Hafiz commented that although the composition is tight , the whole design looks quite flat and that the boy should be sitting facing sideways instead

Fig 3.2.1 First Sketch , Week 6 (11/2/2023)

Sketch 2 :
What needs to be changed - Mr Hafiz commented that although i used the rule of thirds here, the image needs more depth ( separation of foreground, midground & background ) . The TV should stick onto the wall instead

Fig 3.2.2 Sketch 2 , Week 7 (11/7/2023)

Sketch 3 :
I split the sketch into 3 distinct foreground, midground and background as per the last feedback. In the final sketch, the foreground is the two doors opening to the scene, midground is the boy victim and Sadako, background is the curtain and scenery.

3.3 Digitalizing Poster
Before starting on the digitalising, I went to referenced on the "Art Deco" style theme Mr Hafiz gave us as we are suppose to match that theme.

Fig 3.3.1 Art Deco reference , Week 8 (11/14/2023)
Fig 3.3.2 Art Deco reference , Week 8 (11/14/2023)

I proceeded to the digitalising of sketch 3 in Adoble Illustrator and recorded some of the main stages of my work as recorded below :

Draft 1 of digitalized poster :
I got the main layout out and applied some shadows for the boy, but I felt like the whole piece needs more texturing , shadows and light

Fig 3.3.3 Draft 1 of poster , Week 8 (11/15/2023)

Draft 2 of digitalized poster :
I added the grain texture to the main elements inside and some gradient effect for the background as well as the boy, however the lighting and shadow factor is still not prominent enough

Fig 3.3.4 Draft 2 of poster , Week 8 (11/16/2023)

Draft 3 ( Final version ) of digitalized poster png  :
I applied lighting from the television to the ground and also more shadow and light on the boy when the television light is shining down on him

Fig 3.3.5 Final PNG of poster , Week 8 (11/17/2023)

3.4 Animation
We are instructed to do slight secondary animation in our poster so I decided to do the hand twitching and light shining down on the boy.

Draft 1 of gif animation :

Fig 3.4.1 Draft 1 of animation , Week 9 (23/11/2023)

Mr Hafiz felt that I should add more elements to it, for example the hair moving , the clock dripping blood and the TV glitching - and make it loop.

Final gif animation :

Fig 3.4.2 Final gif animation , Week 9 (26/11/2023)

Artist Statement :

Tracing through the urban legend of Sadako Yamamura, she has been haunting and killing victims by mysteriously appearing out from the television and claiming anyone's life when they are caught watching the television. I decided to add the flickering lights , bleeding clock and glitching television to showcase the horror of that moment when she appears from the television and finding her next target to attract the reader's attention to the center. I added space between the victim and Sadako to give a sense of mystery between them. Will the haunting of Sadako stop ? Keep a lookout whenever your television starts glitching as we never know...

4. Feedback

Week 7 :
Mr Hafiz commented that my sketches need more depth ( foreground midground and background ) and avoid complicating the sketch with too much elements.

Week 8 :
Mr Hafiz commented that I need to add more shadows and lightings to your work, after adding the decisive moment poster looks good

Week 9 :
Mr Hafiz commented that more elements can be added to the animation including the tv glitching and blood dripping down from the clock, make the animation on loop. After adding, final outlook looks good

5. Reflection

This was an interesting task for me as i enjoy reading urban legends and now i am given a chance to do it myself. Initially i sketched the frames a few times and realised that without a distinct foreground, midground and background the work will look very flat. I've learnt the importance of composition and how it affects the look of an artwork as it gives them dimension.

Throughout this task, we were given more chance to improve our illustrator skills and we made use of gradients and textures to match the art deco theme given to us. After that we also practiced our animation skills using Photoshop which we have learnt in typography before.
