Task 1 : Exercises

1. LECTURES

Class summary

Week 1 : As our batch has not gotten any Adobe access yet, Mr Hafiz introduced the module to us and taught us to play an online game that will aid to improve our skills of using the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. Our challenge was to clear all the car stage in bezier.method and send a screenshot into Microsoft teams.

Fig 1.1 My take on the challenge

Week 2 : We were briefed on how to do good character designs. Mr Hafiz highlighted 3 main points to draw an effective character design which is making it iconic, simple and unique.

Iconic : We can recognize the character even by looking at their silhouttes
Simplicity : Simple designs allow users to recognize the design of the character easily and understand the concept of the character.
Unique: Memorable characters will leave a long lasting impression on the user's mind and simplicity tends to make it more unique.

I understood the principals of making good character design too and below are the factors

Shape : Will determine the outline of the character, used to distinguish one character from another, make it iconic and add weight to their personality.
Color : Will set the basis role of the character and ensure we use good color psychology to represent the character
Contrast / Emphasize : Make the visual elements contrasting in order to be memorable
Harmony : All elements should complement one another and ensure visual hierarchy
Expression : Express emotive expressions in your character

Week 2 : Lecture Slides on Character Design

Week 3 :
We continued with the lecture slides from character design and Mr Hafiz introduced us the book called "Monster Inc Art Of". We were taught about snowman proportion, which has small head, medium body , long legs etc. The proportion for head body and leg should not be the same.
Mr Hafiz continued with a new lecture on Chiaroscuro , which is using the light and dark to create illusion of three dimensional volume on a flat surface. He introduced us the pathfinder tool in illustrator and taught us how to use it. We did a practical on using pathfinder tool to create a pear and slice it, as well as using the shadow of a skull to outline it in the pear.

Week 3 : Lecture Slides on Chiaroscuro

Week 4 :
Mr Hafiz taught us how to deepen our skills in chiaroscuro design by tracing a human character out instead of doing a pear. We were instructed to apply a texture to our designs as well .We followed his tutorial and utilised mainly the pen tool, compound path , clipping mask to do this exercise. The final outcome of this should be a textured chiaroscuro and a normal chiaroscuro.

Tasks :
Exercise 1 : The Vormator Challenge

Exercise 2 : Chiaroscuro Design

3. The Vormator Challenge : Vormator Shape Tracing
We were given an example of how the 8 different vectors of the vormator challege looks like. Mr Hafiz taught us new tools in illustrator which is mainly the curvature tool and direct selection to edit anchor points. Our task was to trace out the shapes using the tools we learnt .

The Vormator Challenge : Vormator Character Design
After tracing out the shapes, Mr Hafiz instructed us to use the shapes we traced to come out with a character. Some rules we had to follow was :

- Allowed to flip, rotate , intersect , duplicating and scaling of shapes
- No free transformation of shapes

Here are my takes on designing the characters, I designed 3 characters for this exercise

Fig 3.3 My Vormator Character Designs , Week 2 (10/5/2023)

I was free to pick any one of the characters I designed to put it in a card, I chose character 1 and further refined on it. I used the pathfinder tool and ungroup it's tail to give it a different color, I applied radial gradient to it.

After learning how to apply textures to our character, I utislied the clipping mask and compound path tool to add texture to the body and tail of my character design.

I found that my card looks a little bland so I added a texture to it and also created a name layer for my pokemon card.

Chiaroscuro Design :
This is an Italian term which means "light and dark", Mr Hafiz taught us how to create our own designs to bring 2D materials semi to life using shadows. These tasks were done over a few weeks of lectures and tutorials

Pear Chiaroscuro Design
We were instructed to use the pathfinder tool to design a pear shape and color it. I used the pen tool to trace out the outline of the pear, the pencil tool to trace out the shadow line and used pathfinder tool to divide it . The shadow outline of pear has a darker color than the original pear.

Fig 3.6 My Pear Chiaroscuro Design , Week 3 (10/9/2023)

After that, we were taught to use the knife tool to slice open the pear and use our own creativity to design it. Here is my take on the design.

Fig 3.7 Chiaroscuro Exercises , Week 3 (10/9/2023)

Mr Hafiz gave us a picture of a skull with light & shadow and instructed us to trace the shadow of the skull and place it in a pear.

Chiaroscuro Human Design
After practicing on a pear, Mr Hafiz gave us a human character to trace and also apply texture to the character. I did a total of 2 normal designs and also 2 textured designs.

Feedback
Week 2 : Mr Hafiz commented that all my character designs were well done and i am free to pick whichever to work on further. (Vormator Challenge )

Week 4 : Mr Hafiz commented that the image i used for tracing the pear is more like a shape instead of a shadow so he suggested me to change to using the skull image he provided. ( Pear Chiaroscuro Task )

Reflection
I thoroughly enjoyed the classes over the past 5 weeks and find it interesting that we can actually create any shapes and objects using illustrator. I learnt many new skills and find it applicable each design I did. Its important to always remember the skills learnt in each class and apply them in the future as well.
