Project 2 - Double Exposure & Photo Manipulation
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Lecture Summary
Week 5 Lecture Summary :
Today, Mr Martin taught us how to do double exposure designs in
photoshop. We utilised more adjustment layer blending such as the
gradient maps and levels. In our exercise, we use masking tools and
other skills we learnt along the way to create the double exposure
designs.
Week 5 Lecture Slides :
Week 6 Lecture Summary :
Today Mr Martin taught us how to do displacement in photos using the
distort filter and using smart filter. We were given 3 practical
works to practice and we can apply this new skill in our photo
manipulation poster later on. Some key features of using the distort
filter are :
1. Photo must be in black and white
2. Photo must be saved as a photoshop (psd) file as the distort filter
cannot recognize other formats of files
The distort filter is useful when we want to displace pictures but making
it look natural at the same time.
Week 7 Lecture Summary :
Today Mr Martin introduced to us a new tool called stamp tool, which can be used to patch the background, the elliptical marquee tool used to create an oval and played around with the blending options (Bevel & Embass). Using these tools we were tasked to transform a model into a cyborg - prosthetic limb and synthetic skin. After the practical, we were briefed on the outlines & expectations on our final project called 'Self Titled' .
Week 7 Lecture Slides :
Week 8 : Recess Week
Week 9 Lecture Summary :
Today Mr Martin let us do an exercise called 'flower girl face' digital photography exercise. We mainly made use of the blending tool, lasso tool, pen tool, gradient map to carry out this exercise. We followed his tutorial to produce the final artwork, after that Mr Martin briefed us about our final project and we needed to come out with our ideas and moodboard by next week.
Week 9 Lecture Slides :
2. Practicals
Week 5 :
Mr Martin showed us how to create a double exposure image following the
tutorial video, the main tools used were object masking, quick selection
tool , adjustment layers and blending modes.
Week 6 :
We were given 3 practical works to practice distortion filter and they
are as follows :
A) Displacing a liverpool logo and putting it on a girl's face
- Make the image of the girl black and white
- Apply gaussian blur 1.0 onto image
- Save this as a photoshop file
- Copy and paste the logo onto the original girl's face
- Make the liverpool logo layer a smart layer
- Apply displacement filter onto the logo and referenced to the saved
black and white girl's face
-Apply darken blending mode on the logo
- Create a layer mask and use the brush tool to erase off the excess
parts
B) Displacing Malaysia's flag and putting it on a fabric
cloth
- Make the image of the fabric black and white
- Apply gaussian blur 1.0 onto image
- Save this as a photoshop file
- Copy and paste the flag onto the original fabric image
- Make the flag a smart layer
- Apply displacement filter onto the flag and referenced to the saved
black and white fabric
-Apply multiply blending mode on the logo
C) Displacing giraffe's texture and putting it on a cat
- Make the image of the cat black and white
- Apply gaussian blur 1.0 onto image
- Save this as a photoshop file
- Copy and paste the giraffe texture onto the original cat image
- Make the texture a smart layer
- Apply displacement filter onto the texture and referenced to the
saved black and white cat
-Apply multiply blending mode on the texture
- Create a layer mask and use the brush tool to erase off any excess
parts
Week 7 :
We were instructed to follow the tutorial and create a cyborg human using the new tools we learnt , this practical is split into two parts - creating the prosthetic limb and synthetic skin.

Week 8 : Recess Week
Week 9 :
We were instructed to do a 'flower face girl' exercise following the tutorial , we need to add different bushes and butterflies to make it look more realistic.

3. Project 2 Part 1 - Double Exposure
Project 2 : Double Exposure
& Photo Manipulation
This project is split into 2 exercises, one of which is our own
double exposure portrait and the other is poster
creation.
Exercise 1 : Double Exposure
This exercise is split into 2 parts, one of which is to create a
double exposure based on the video Mr Martin showed us and the other
is to create our own self portrait double exposure.
Part 1 : Double Exposure Tutorial
Following the video tutorial, we were expected to replicate and come
up with the double exposure image. In this tutorial, we mainly
practiced on how to use layer masks to mask out the needed parts and
applying blending modes to them. Below is the double exposure design
i created as per the video.

Part 2 : Own Double Exposure
For the submission, we were tasked to create our own version of
double exposure and applying our new learnt skills by watching the
tutorial. Below are the steps i took to create the designs.
I asked my friends to helped me take a portrait which I will be
using for the design.

I did some research and found some inspirations on Pinterest on how
a good double exposure is done.

I decided to go with a natural outdoor scenery feel and
selected a few good pictures i will be utilising in my design.

4. Project 2 Part 2 - Poster Creation
For the second half of project 2 we are instructed to create a poster with
image elements that are photo realistic.
Research
To kick start, I went to Pinterest to get the concept of blending and
merging 2 non related objects to create 1 object. I compiled some references
I found below.

Sketching & Ideas
After getting the concept of how to merge objects together, I proceeded to
thought of my own ideas and jotted them down onto a sketch
After showing the sketches to Mr Martin , he felt that both idea 1 and 4 is
pretty good but he preferred idea 1 the most
Digitalisation
I went to the internet to find suitable pictures of a opened book and an
owl to use for my photo manipulation , it was a bit of a challenge because i
need to find a book of the right angle to use.

Week 5 :
Mr Martin commented that the double exposure is quite good as it
encompasses the right elements.
Week 6 :
Mr Martin felt that it is worth a shot to go with idea 1 and commented
that i should make the books blend better with the body by darkening the
sides of the owl and apply blur to both the wings.
Week 7 :
Mr Martin commented that the final outlook is quite nice
6. Reflection
Before starting this project , i was anticipating it quite alot because learning how to do good double exposure and photo manipulation is very interesting and i always wondered how other designers are able to create such design works. I learnt many good useful skills in illustrator such as distortion filter and creating smart layers - and these tools are often used in this task as well. It was challenging to do the photo manipulation because i had to make it look natural and attractive at the same time but even though it is challenging , i find myself overcoming the hurdles and creating a satisfying final piece.
