Choosing Topic & Theme :

As an avid gamer, the first thought that came to my mind was to create something related to League of Legends. Many game infographics I’ve seen tend to categorize champions based on their regions or the different equipment used in the game. Since League of Legends has a well-defined game map consisting of various regions across Runeterra, I believe this would be an excellent theme for this exercise.

Instead of just listing champions by their respective regions, I could explore deeper layers of information. For example, I could highlight how each region influences its champions’ playstyle, abilities, or lore. Additionally, I could incorporate role-based classifications (e.g., Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC, Support) alongside their regional affiliations to show a more strategic perspective.

To make the infographic more engaging, I could use Runeterra’s world map as a visual foundation, overlaying champions onto their respective regions.

Looking For References Online :

For my infographic, I’m focusing on category-based groupings, as I find them visually engaging and easy to understand. My goal is to create an infographic that categorizes elements within League of Legends in a structured and compelling way.

I came across some interesting infographics that categorize Pokémon by their elemental types, such as Fire, Water, and Earth. This inspired me to take a similar approach with League of Legends, where champions could be grouped based on specific criteria, such as their regions, roles, abilities, or thematic design.

Arranging Data :

I compiled all the data I am using for this exercise and mainly I will be using Location , Alphabet , Category & Hierarchy to categorize the information.

LATCH Theories Utilised - Locations , Alphabet , Category and Hierarchy

Location :  Each champion will be split by their region, the runeterra map consists of 7 regions which are Bandle City , Bilgewater , Demacia , Frejlord , Ionia , Ixtal and Noxus.

Alphabet : Within each region , the champions will be further arranged using alphabet such as A-Z.

Category : Within each region , the champions will be grouped according to their roles such as support , tank , carry or assassin.

Hierarchy : Within each region , the champions will be labelled with their difficulty level to play from easy to hard.

Sketches :
For my first sketch, I used the Runeterra map as the central visual element and divided the champions based on their respective regions. This layout provides a clear and immersive way to categorize the champions while staying true to the lore of League of Legends.

Within each region, I plan to further break down the champions based on their skillsets and difficulty levels. This additional categorization will help highlight how different regions influence a champion’s playstyle and complexity.

For my second sketch, I took a different approach by replacing the Runeterra map with the League of Legends logo at the center. Instead of using a geographical-based structure, I opted for a more minimalist and symmetrical layout, where the categories are evenly distributed around the logo.

Each category will still group champions based on their regions, but the focus will be on achieving a cleaner, more structured design. By arranging the categories in a balanced manner, the infographic will maintain clarity and visual appeal while making it easier for viewers to navigate the information.

For my third sketch, I opted for a top-down layout to structure the champions in a clear and hierarchical manner. Each region’s icon will be placed at the front, serving as a recognizable visual anchor, with the champions belonging to that region positioned behind it in a cascading format.

This layout allows for a more organized and structured flow, making it easy for viewers to scan through the infographic and quickly associate champions with their respective regions.

Digitalization :

Before working on the layout, I decided to first gather and compile all the raw materials, including champion portraits and region icons. By organizing these assets beforehand, I can ensure a smoother design process when placing them into the final layout.

This step allows me to maintain consistency in icon styles, image resolutions, and overall visual coherence. It also helps me decide on potential adjustments or refinements needed before integration, such as resizing, cropping, or color correction to ensure clarity.

By having all the elements properly categorized and prepared in advance, I can focus more on the structural design and layout composition, ensuring that the final infographic is both visually appealing and easy to interpret.

For the map, I decided to make further adjustments in Photoshop, applying blending layers to enhance its visual impact and make the original details stand out more. By tweaking the contrast, saturation, and lighting effects, I can ensure that the map remains visually engaging without overwhelming the other elements in the infographic.

Fig 1.8 Left ( Before ) vs Right ( After )

I started off by placing the League of Legends logo and the region icons onto the map as the foundational elements of the infographic. Positioning these key visuals first helps establish a clear structure and ensures that the layout remains balanced and visually cohesive.

The logo serves as the focal point, anchoring the design, while the region icons are strategically placed to align with their respective areas on the map. This setup not only reinforces the geographical aspects of Runeterra but also makes it easier to organize the champion placements within each region later on.

Next, I created the boxes in Illustrator and strategically placed them across the map, ensuring that each box aligns with its corresponding region. This step helps to clearly segment the infographic, making it easier to categorize champions while maintaining a structured and organized layout.

Each box acts as a container for the champions belonging to that specific region, providing a clear visual separation between different areas of Runeterra. I focused on ensuring that the placement complements the map's natural geography, avoiding clutter while maintaining readability.

Next, I began filling in the details, carefully matching each champion to their respective region boxes. To enhance clarity and structure, I further categorized the champions within each box based on their champion type (e.g., Mage, Assassin, Tank, Marksman, Support) and difficulty level.

For difficulty levels, I implemented a color-coded system to make it easy to distinguish at a glance:

  • Green → Easy
  • Yellow → Moderate
  • Red → Difficult

This approach ensures that players can quickly identify not only where a champion originates from but also how complex they are to play. By combining regional affiliation, role classification, and difficulty scaling, the infographic provides a comprehensive yet visually digestible way to explore League of Legends champions.

Fig 2.1 Process #3

Next, I created a legend box at the bottom of the infographic to provide a clear reference for the champion types. This legend includes symbols/icons that correspond to different champion classifications (e.g., Fighter, Mage, Assassin, Tank, Marksman, Support), ensuring that viewers can quickly interpret the information within each region’s box.

By adding this legend box, I aim to improve the readability and accessibility of the infographic, making it easy for both new and experienced players to understand the categorization system at a glance. The symbols act as visual shortcuts, reducing the need for excessive text while keeping the overall design clean and structured.

Fig 2.2 Process #4

Next, I imported the file into Photoshop to further enhance the background of the map, adding visual elements that bring the infographic to life. To make it more engaging and immersive, I incorporated clouds, Poros (a signature game icon), and dragons from the game, seamlessly blending them into the design.

The addition of clouds helps create a layered depth effect, giving the map a more dynamic and atmospheric feel.

Fig 2.3 Outcome #1

After receiving feedback from Mr. Shamsul during tutorial day, he advised that the infographic needs to be in A4 size. To ensure it fits the required format while maintaining clarity, I made further adjustments by adding an introductory layer above the map that provides a clearer overview of the different regions before diving into the detailed breakdown.

I realized that the region icons on the map appeared too small, making it harder for viewers to immediately recognize them. To address this, I introduced a dedicated section that highlights each region more prominently, ensuring they stand out before transitioning into the champion placements. This helps establish a stronger visual hierarchy and improves the readability of the infographic.

2. Feedback

Week 3 : Mr Shamsul feedback that the overall infographic looks good but I need to readjust it to A4 size.

3. Reflection

Experience :
The experience of creating this infographic was both engaging and challenging, as it required a balance between design aesthetics and effective information organization. Starting with raw materials, I systematically structured the layout, ensuring that the champions were categorized logically based on their regions, types, and difficulty levels. The process involved multiple iterations, from selecting the League of Legends map as a visual foundation to experimenting with different layout approaches, such as using the game logo as a central element or adopting a top-down categorization method.

Observation :
Through careful observation, I noticed that visual hierarchy and clarity are crucial in making an infographic effective. While the initial design made use of region icons on the map, I later realized that they were too small to be immediately recognizable. This led me to introduce an additional layer above the map to better highlight each region before diving into the details.

Findings :
From this exercise, I found that planning and refining the layout in stages is crucial to achieving an informative yet visually appealing design. Structuring the infographic with a logical flow—starting with region introductions, followed by categorized champions, and ending with a legend for reference—helped improve the clarity of information.
