1. Module Information Booklet
Attached below is the module information booklet for design research dissertation for the term September 2024 - January 2025.
2. Project 1 - Draft Dissertation
Literature Matrix
Before starting on the literature review, I did a compilation of the articles I am going to use and did a thorough comparison for each of them.
With the contents from the articles compiled in the literature matrix , I proceeded on to write my literature review, attached below is my final draft for literature review.
After adding on the other sections provided by Mr Asrizal for the dissertation draft, I completed my draft dissertation and ready for submission.
3. Project 2 - Final Dissertation
Final Dissertation
After refining my draft dissertation , my final dissertation is completed and the topic is " User Preference & Task Performance in Light & Dark Modes Across Coding and Design Application Types "
4. Project 3 - Visual Design Publication
Moodboard for Visual Design
After completing our final dissertation, this project is to design our dissertation into a visual publication book. I started with my mood board first, listing the typography and style I would like to go for.
Final Visual Publication (PDF) :
Visual Publication in HTML5 Flipbook :
5. Final Project - Journal Article
Attached below is my journal article where I narrowed down the scope of study in my dissertation and focused on the impact of cognitive loads in light and dark mode across graphic and coding softwares.
6. Lecturer's Weekly Feedback
Documented below is the weekly feedback and reflection/progress each week
7. Reflection
Experience :
Throughout the research dissertation module, the journey was both challenging and fulfilling. Drafting the dissertation required meticulous planning, as it laid the groundwork for the subsequent stages of the research process. This phase taught me the importance of organizing ideas coherently and maintaining a clear structure. Transitioning from the draft to the final dissertation was a rigorous process of refinement, requiring consistent feedback integration and attention to detail. The visual design publication, on the other hand, allowed me to explore creative ways to present my findings, enhancing the overall communication of my research. Additionally, writing the journal article introduced me to a more formalized academic style, teaching me how to adapt my content for a wider academic audience. Each stage of the process contributed to my growth as a researcher, equipping me with valuable skills in critical thinking, writing, and design.
Observations :
Through this module, I observed how theoretical knowledge from past studies intersects with practical implementation. The research process revealed the significance of grounding arguments in well-supported literature while maintaining a balance between academic rigor and practical relevance. The iterative feedback process exposed areas where my initial ideas needed refinement, particularly in the articulation of arguments and clarity in data representation. The visual design publication highlighted the role of effective design in enhancing comprehension and engagement, emphasizing that research is not just about findings but also about how they are communicated. The journal article submission process provided insights into academic publication standards, such as adhering to specific formatting and citation requirements, further bridging the gap between academia and practice.
Findings :
The findings from my dissertation were both insightful and meaningful, contributing to the body of knowledge in the chosen research area. The process of analyzing data and drawing conclusions allowed me to synthesize information critically, uncovering patterns and implications that were initially unclear. The visual design publication helped distill these findings into digestible, visually appealing formats, making the research accessible to a broader audience. Preparing the journal article pushed me to refine my results further, ensuring clarity and academic integrity. Ultimately, these outputs demonstrated the importance of presenting research in diverse formats to meet the needs of different audiences
