Project 3 : Design

INSTRUCTIONS

Submission Requirement :
1. A recap of Task 3 brief
2. Some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own
ideas
3. 3-5 sketches (manual/digital) of your own ideas
4. Final design in A4 size, JPEG
5. A rationale, in about 150-200 words, explaining/defending the
decisions made in your design, the meaning/purpose of the design
and the design principles that are found in the design.
6. Feedback from the lecturer

Task 3 Brief :
After analysing the design of your choice in Task 2, you will now produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one you had analysed, or as a reaction to it. You should also apply your knowledge of design principles in your creation. You may use any medium and/or materials that are suitable to convey your visual message. Direct use of photographs is not permitted. Any work that is found plagiarised will result in an F grade for the overall module and the student will be subjected to the policies of the University concerning academic misconduct.

1) Project 3 : Design

Before starting out the design, I consulted with Dr Charles to put all my research to creation of artwork in a presentation slide format as it will be neater and easier to read. Below documents my work in full ( Research , Moodboard , Sketches , Final Artwork , Rationale & Design Principles used ) :

Fig 1.1 "Balance in Blossom" by Ho Winnie , Week 7 (3/16/2024)

Title of Artwork : "Balance in Blossom : A Geisha's Equality"
Designer's Name : Ho Winnie
Year : 2024
Medium : Digital Print

2 ) Feedback

Week 6 : Dr Charles felt that the overall composition is good but more works need to be put into highlight the features of the geisha. Small nuances need to be made to the geisha to achieve a more symmetrical look - for example the face and the hair.

My Improvement Process After Feedback :

3) Further Reading
For further reading, I chose to read " Design Principles : Compositional, Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Balance " by Bradley S . This was recommended by Dr Jinchi under "Balance and Unity" lecture.

My main takeaways from this reading is :
1) Compositional balance is crucial in order to attain a harmonious design layout , arranging both both positive elements in negative space is crucial so that it does not overpower each other
2) Balance can be attained through symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance , radial or mosaic
3) Asymmetrical balance brings in dynamism and interest as it has unequal weight on each side of the composition. One side has a dominant element and it is coupled by a lesser focal point element on the other side
4) Symmetrical balance gives people a sense of stability and formality as there are equal weights on both side of the composition
5) Radial balance is where it centers around a focal point , everything will radiate from the center, making it a strong point of attention
6) Mosaic balance has complex elements mixed with chaotic and harmonious arrangements
7) Good visual weight balance and direction will significantly impact how a composition looks
